Under 20s: Peru Dropped As South American Youth Championship Hosts

The South American Football Confederation (CSF) announced on Friday that Peru have lost the right to host the 2009 South American U-20 Championships due to an ongoing power struggle inside the Peruvian Football Association (FPF).

The government of Peru's Institute of Sports (IPD) does not recognise Manuel Burga as the head of the FPF, and the dispute is causing massive problems for Peru, with FIFA threatening action if the issue is not resolved in the near future.

CSF spokesman Nestor Benitez confirmed Venezuela as the new hosts for the tournament that is due to take place in January 2009 - the nation having proven their credentials with the successful hosting of last year's Copa America. The 2009 tournament will mark the fifth occasion on which they have hosted the U-20 Championship.
