River Plate youth team coach Gabriel Rodriguez will take charge of the first team until the end of the Apertura tournament following the resignation of Diego Simeone, it was confirmed on Tuesday.
Rodriguez conducted training for the first time on Tuesday morning as he began preparations for River's weekend tie away to Independiente, but had to do so without Leonardo Ponzio, who will miss the remainder of the campaign with a metatarsal fracture picked up against Huracan on Sunday.
River are simply looking to restore pride in their remaining five Apertura fixtures, as they currently sit rock bottom with only ten points from the fourteen games played thus far.
America Gallego, Diego Cagna and Nery Pumpido are among the candidates to take over as coach on a full-time basis, although Rodriguez could bring himself into play if he can get the team ticking in the final month of the Apertura.
