Wilson Palacios' Brother Kidnapped

The brother of Honduran midfielder Wilson Palacios has been kidnapped, as confirmed by a statement from Birmingham City football club, where Palacios is currently on loan.

The statement read:

"The club is supporting the player at this difficult time and helping him remain in constant contact with his family in Honduras.

"The matter is being dealt with by the Honduran police, therefore Wilson is staying in the UK in the hope that his 15-year-old brother, Edwin Rene, will be returned to his family soon.

"Birmingham City Football Club will continue to support Wilson in whichever way we can."

This sort of incident is all too common place in Latin America, with numerous players having suffered similar fates. For example, upon his transfer to Barcelona in 2002, Juan Riquelme's brother was kidnapped, forcing him to pay a ransom to negotiate the release of his sibling.

Hopefully this situation will be resolved quickly and our thoughts go out to Wilson and his family.
