Chile In Contention To Host 2015 Women's World Cup

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has described Chile's bid to host the 2015 Women's World Cup as a "serious proposal," and indicated that they and Canada are the only two nations to have so far expressed an interest in hosting the competition.

The Women's U-20 World Cup is currently taking place in Chile and Blatter is impressed by the manner in which the tournament has been organised by the host nation, putting them in a prime position for the senior competition in 2015.

"I must congratulate the organisers of the first worldwide women's competition taking place in South America," he told reporters at a news conference on Friday.

"The exisiting infrastructure is impressive and will no doubt be improved upon with additional stadia between now and 2015..."

Having missed out on the hosting the 2011 competition to Germany, Canada are currently Chile's only competition for the 2015 tournament, although other nations could yet enter the fray before FIFA's selection process gets underway.

Brazil's Women lose in World Cup final

After a brilliant tournament, Brazil's women couldn't quite finish it off in style, as they lost 2-0 to the holders Germany in Sunday's final.

Brazil once again played the game in the right way, with their fast, creative play proving a problem for the German defense from the off, with Daniela striking a perfectly hit volley which cannoned back off the post to safety.

The scores were level as the teams went in for half time, but it didn't take long after the break for the deadlock to be broken, as Birgit Prinz gave Germany the lead after fifty-two minutes. Brazil had a chance to hit back when Cristiane was tripped in the area. However, tournament star Marta's timid penalty was saved by the German keeper.

Daniela once again threatened with a 30 yard free kick that was beaten onto the post by the German keeper, but Brazilian hearts were broken four minutes from time when Simone Laudehr headed home to seal the win for the Germans.

Brazil's women will look back on the tournament with some pleasure as they performed above expectations, and were so close to winning their first World Cup. Impressive forward Cristiane summed their feelings up after the defeat:

"Today we didn't play very well, we couldn't take our chances and Germany did, so that was the difference. It was a sad day but this team has done a very good job, we have 21 very talented players and I think we have given a very good example to the girls in Brazil."

Maybe next time they can go all the way.

Brazil beat USA in Women's Semi

Brazil pulled off a shock yesterday, ending the USA's 51 match unbeaten run with a 4-0 victory in the Women's World Cup Semi-Final.

Inspired by Marta, Brazil swept their more illustrious (in Women's football) opponents aside with a brilliant display of attacking football in the true tradition of Brazil.

A Leslie Osborne own goal gave Brazil the lead after twenty minutes, and once Marta added a second, seven minutes later, they never looked like relinquishing their advantage. Second half goals from Cristiane, and a second from Marta sealed a famous victory, and consigned the USA to the largest defeat in their history.

Brazil will now face Germany in Sunday's final in Shanghai.

Brazil's Women Team Performing Well in Women's World Cup

Title says it all really. Brazil's women team have had a great tournament so far and have made their way to the semi-final, where they will face the USA.

Their two most impressive players throughout the tournament have been Marta and Cristiane, both of whom are based in Europe, playing for Umea and Wolfsburg respectively. Their silky skills, mixed with an unerring ability to read each others minds during play, has resulted in nine goals between them, in Brazil's run to the semis.

They finished top of their group with nine points after defeating New Zealand 5-0, China 4-0 and Denmark 1-0, to set them up for a quarter final tie against Australia. The Aussies twice fought back from a goal behind before Cristiane put Brazil into the lead for a third time in the seventy-fifth minute. Despite a late Australia rally, Brazil held off to win a place in the semi-finals.

The USA will prove tough opposition for the Brazilians, as they come into the match on a 51 game unbeaten streak. Brazil have impressed many viewers throughout the competition with their attacking brand of football, but will have to be at their best if they are to defeat the two-time World Cup winners.

The game will be shown on Eurosport from 13:00 GMT tomorrow, with live coverage also available through FIFA.com TV for free.
