Sao Paulo continued their recent dominance of the Brazilian Championship by claiming their third straight title following a 1-0 win away to Goias on Sunday.
A suspiciously offside looking goal from Borges mid-way through the first half was enough to seal the title for the Tricolor Paulista, despite the best efforts of nearest challengers Gremio, who finished three points shy following a 2-0 win over Atletico Belo Horizonte on the final day.
Cruzeiro confirmed their place in the first round of the 2009 Copa Libertadores with a 4-1 thrashing of Portuguesa, while Flamengo were unable to take advantage of Palmeiras' defeat to Botafogo, as they lost 5-3 away to Atletico Paranaense, handing the Verdão a place in the preliminary round of the Libertadores.
Ipatinga and Portuguesa were already assured of relegation before the concluding weekend of the season, with Vasco da Gama and Figueirense joining them in Serie B folllowing the final day results.
Vasco lost 2-0 at home to Vitoria, consigning the club to the first relegation in their 110 year history, while Figueirense were relegated on goal difference despite a 3-1 victory over Copa Sudamericana champions Internacional.
