Reports in the Spanish press suggest that Atletico Madrid will make a move for Estudiantes full-back Marcos Angeleri in the January transfer window in order to fill their problem right-back position.
Atletico have been forced into playing the likes of Pablo Ibanez, Luis Perea and Antonio Lopez out of position on the right hand side of their defence thus far this season, and will look to strengthen this area in order to maintain their challenge in La Liga and the Champions League into next year.
AS report that Atletico Sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch has identified Angeleri, 25, as his prime target, and will make contact with Estudiantes in January in the hope of sealing a cut-price deal for the highly-rated defender.
Angeleri is out of contract in June of next year, and even if Estudiantes are unwilling to discuss a transfer with Atletico in the winter transfer window, he could still agree terms with the Spanish side on a pre-contract basis to join them for the 2009/10 season.
New Argentina coach Diego Maradona is a known admirer of Angeleri, and if the defender could prove himself capable of playing in Europe then it would surely put him squarely at the head of the pack to replace the ageing Javier Zanetti in the national team set-up.
