Defensor Sporting sealed the Uruguayan Apertura 2007 with a 2-1 victory over Central Espanyol at the weekend; their first title since 1991.
Defensor are not a rich club, but are able to obtain success on occasion due to their excellent youth system, which has seen players such as Sebastian Abreu, Dario Silva, Nicolas Olivera and Gonzalo Vargas pass through their doors in the last ten years or so.
The standout youngster in the Championship winning squad was Sebastian Fernandez, who alongside experienced campaigners such as Pablo Gaglianone, Martin Parodi and Carlos Morales was able to take Defensor to a 10:2:2 record with one round of games to play.
Luis Insaurralde, head of sports development at Defensor, drew parallels between Defensor's success and that of Lanus in the Argentine Apertura:
"Defensor is a development model in Uruguay, to the LanĂºs style"
Coach Jorge da Silva must now concentrate on building on this success as they attempt to defend their title in the Clausura and gain a qualifying place for the 2009 Copa Libertadores.
