Ramon Diaz Favourite For River Plate Job

San Lorenzo coach Ramon Diaz has emerged as the front-runner for the vacant managerial position at River Plate, after the River board asked permission from San Lorenzo to speak to their manager about the role last night.

Diaz, 48, enjoyed a successful spell in charge of River from 1995 to 2003, taking three Apertura and two Clausura crowns, along with a Copa Libertadores triumph in 1996. He joined San Lorenzo this year and delivered the 2007 Clausura, the club's first league title in six years.

Diego Simeone was originally thought to be the favourite for the position, but River were discouraged from pursuing him further, due to the large compensation that Independiente were asking for.

Americo Gallego, Leonardo Astrada and Claudio Borghi are also in the frame should Ramon Diaz not sign on.
