Who Did We Just Sign? - Lucas Leiva/Liverpool

Liverpool unveiled their new Brazilian signing Lucas Leiva yesterday, with both Rafa Benitez and Steven Gerrard singing the praises of the twenty year old midfielder.

The player, who carries the name Lucas on the back of his shirt, certainly comes to Anfield with a great pedigree behind him.

He was the youngest player to ever receive Placar magazine's Bola De Ouro, awarded to the best player in the Campeonato Brasileiro, for his performances at Gremio last year.

He is also the current captain of the Brazilian under-20 squad, playing a vital role in their 2007 South American Youth Championship victory. His absence from the recent U-20 World Cup through injury is seen as one of the key reasons Brazil failed to deliver during the tournament.

Noted South American football journalist Tim Vickery described Lucas as,

"A big, blonde figure whose power and physical strength comes with attacking ability.

He can pass well and loves to rumble forward. He gets on the scoresheet both with blistering shots from range and from bursting beyond the strikers."

It all sounds very promising for Liverpool fans, who should get a chance to form their own opinion of him today, as he is expected to play a part in their Asia Trophy final against Portsmouth this lunchtime.

In the meantime, here is a video collecting many of his best moments whilst playing for Gremio.
